Puzzle #16: Draughts

  • DifficultyMedium
  • To moveDark
  • TaskWin in 3
  • Main line5 half-moves

Dark to move. Dark has 3 men and 1 king, Light 0 men and 1 king.

Win within 3 moves: at the end the opponent has no pieces left or no legal move, whatever they try.

What the position is about

  • sacrifice — A piece is given up on purpose: the forced capture pulls the opponent onto the square you need.
  • crowning — A man reaches the last row on the way, and the new king does the rest.
  • kings on the board — At least one king is on the board, so pieces can come back as well as go forward.

Finding the way in

Try the move that gives a piece away first: a forced capture often lines the opponent's men up for a double jump.

Take your time. There is no clock on the result, and a wrong move is simply taken back so you can look again.

Start with 27-31. Played out against the stiffest resistance, the whole line goes: 27-31 28x19 26-23 19x26 31x22.
