Puzzle #28: Mill

  • DifficultyHard
  • To moveDark
  • TaskWin in 2
  • Main line3 half-moves

Dark to move, with 3 light and 3 dark men in the game. One side is down to its last three men, and those may now jump anywhere that is free.

A mill is not enough here: win the game within 2 moves, leaving the opponent with two men or with no legal move.

What the position is about

  • flying men — A side with three men left may jump to any empty point, which makes every pair in a line a threat.
  • double threat — The key move creates two threats at once, and one reply cannot stop both.

Finding the way in

In the winning endings the opponent is short of men or of room. Count their legal moves after each of yours: taking away the last free point wins as surely as taking a man.

Before you touch a piece, list every forcing move you have and every threat the opponent has; the answer is almost always on that short list.

Start with c4-f2. Played out against the stiffest resistance, the whole line goes: c4-f2 a4-a7 f4-b2xa7.

Solve it and the next puzzle of the same game is one tap away. Your solved puzzles are ticked in the list, in this browser only.
